GOREY FILM CLUB : ARTHOUSE CINEMA ON YOUR DOORSTEP

Gorey Film Club, established in March 2018, is a 32 SEAT CINEMA, where local film-lovers gather every fortnight to watch critically-acclaimed films from around the world. We're a micro Cinema that pitches high. So in addition to an impressively diverse programme, we also host special discussions and Q&A's to encourage inquiry, an exchange of ideas and a wider appreciation of the cinematic arts.

We are proud to partner accessCINEMA to deliver a new community cinema experience. access>CINEMA’s purpose is to deliver a diverse range of quality cinema, that is not available on commercial cinema screens, to local Irish audiences; to provide advice, expertise and support for cultural film programming and technical presentation; to support and present the work of Irish filmmakers; and to grow, develop and promote opportunities to expand access to and participation with cultural cinema exhibition regionally.

“★★★★★ A perfectly pitched adaptation of John McGahern’s final novel” - Donald Clarke, The Irish Times

Director: Pat Collins

Cast: Barry Ward, Anna Bederke, Lalor Roddy, Sean McGinley

Film info: 111 minutes, Ireland / UK, 2023, 12A

Short synopsis:

Ireland, the 1970s. Joe and Kate Ruttledge return from London to live in a small rural community. They quickly become close friends with many of the older men and women living in the area. Over the course of a year, Joe and Kate grapple with major life decisions, while also witnessing their neighbours’ moments of joy, disappointment, conflict and loss.

Based on John McGahern’s final novel and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pat Collins (Song of Granite), That They May Face The Rising Sun is a beautifully bittersweet portrait of a very particular time and place. It’s a perfectly-observed slice of life - full of humour and warmth, while also tenderly reflecting on the people and traditions that Ireland has lost.

Film info: 133 mins. Italy / France / Switzerland. 2023. 12A (IFCO) / 15 (BBFC)

Short synopsis (60 words or less)

Tuscany, the 1980s. Englishman Arthur, recently released from prison, finds himself drawn back towards the hometown of his former, now absent lover Beniamina. Adrift and living in a shack, he makes a living through his almost supernatural sense for discovering long-lost Etruscan artefacts. He falls in with a group of grave-robbers and embarks on a series of increasingly risky thefts.

The new film from Alice Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro) is a fresh, engrossing adventure film that’s simultaneously gritty and magical; sad and romantic; satisfying and unpredictable. It is simply a film to lose yourself in for two wonderful hours.
